About this image

Today's VIS image shows sand dunes located on the floor of Russell Crater. Best known for it's huge ridge dune (top of image), the floor of Russell Crater contains other dune fields, including the individual dunes visible in this image. Individual dunes show the crater floor surface between each dune. This type of dune field develops where there is only limited amounts of sand available for dune building. Russell Crater is located in Noachis Terra and is 135km (83miles) in diameter.
