Scaled Image

About this image

The polar layers are evident in this THEMIS image. The layers are composed mainly of ice, with in some instances a thin coating of dust. Unlike glacial varves seen in Earth based glacial systems, it is currently unknown if the polar layers on Mars represent a seasonal change. Notice the smooth icy polar capped surface in the middle of the image. This image was first released as an Art image, perhaps you see the shoulder and side of an elf's head.
