About this image

The grabens (fractures) that dominate this scene are located northwest of a large shield volcano called Elysium Mons. Layered rock is evident along the lips of the graben as are ripples on the floors of these features. These ripples are likely small sand dunes. Some shallow grabens are also seen in this region.
