About this image

The force of moving water from a flood carved teardrop-shaped islands within Granicus Valles. The orientation of the islands can be used as an indicator of the direction the water flowed. In this case, the water flowed primarily towards the upper left of the image. The image also contains many narrow sinuous channels. The floods occurred prior to a later tectonic event in the region as determined by cross cutting relationships. The tectonic event caused the crust to fracture into numerous blocks and graben. Many graben can be seen cutting across the former flood pathways in the upper left corner of this image.
