Russell Crater Dunes

Today's VIS image shows sand dunes located on the floor of Russell Crater. Best known for it's huge ridge dune, the floor of Russell Crater contains other dune fields, like the one in this image. These are individual dunes, showing the crater floor surface between each dune. This type of dune field develops where there is only limited amounts of sand available for dune building. Russell Crater is located in Noachis Terra and is 135km (83miles) in diameter.
