About this image

Today’s VIS image shows a small portion of Olympia Undae. Olympia Undae is a large dune field that dominates the plains along part of the north polar cap. This dune field surrounds 1/3 of the north polar cap and is the largest of several dune fields that encircle the pole. This VIS image was collected during summer. It is during this season that winds are able to move sand sized particles, slowly modifying the dunes.
