A ROLLING SURFACE marks Nili Patera, the summit region of Syrtis Major, a large, but low-rise volcano. Inside Nili, scientists have found both ordinary basalt lavas and flows of dacite, a different kind of lava that indicates that molten rock has evolved chemically within the volcano.
